“How’d that go?” Natalie asked when Lorelei returned to the kitchen.

“Not well.” She picked up a meat cleaver and began vigorously chopping a tomato for the omelet station.

“Lorelei, put down the deadly weapon,” Theo ordered from the grill.

“I’m fine.”

“What happened?” Eloise asked. “You look fit to strangle a goose.”

“A goose and a pack of hyenas,” Lorelei said.

“What does that even mean?” Natalie asked, rolling her eyes again.

“I don’t want to talk about it,” Lorelei told them “That man has to be one of the rudest human beings on this planet. Rude, entitled, and just plain mean.”

“Thought you didn’t want to talk about it,” Theo said.

“He was mad because I showed up with the tray unannounced.”

“But I thought that’s what he wanted us to do,” Eloise said.

“Apparently, we are not to arrive next time without announcing ourselves first,” she said, mocking Paul’s words.

“But I thought you said there wouldn’t be a next time,” Eloise said.

“I did,” Lorelei said, dumping the chopped tomato into a bowl. “And I made sure he knew that, too.”

“I don’t get it,” Natalie said. “Are we going to deliver lunch to them or what?”

“No, we are not,” Lorelei said firmly. “As soon as breakfast is over, I intend to march directly to Captain Stemple’s office and get this straight once and for all.”

“No need to march to my office,” Captain Stemple said from the kitchen entryway. “I’m right here.”

“What is it about people sneaking up on me today?” Lorelei snapped.

“How about you and I go have a chat in private?” Captain Stemple said, smiling.

“That’s probably a good idea.” Her heart still raced in her chest as she washed her hands under the faucet and headed into the empty dining room with the captain.

“You seem pretty wound up,” Captain Stemple said.

“Yes, I am. I mean no disrespect.”

“Now, you’re well within your right to be wound up,” the captain said, shaking her head. “I just got an earful from a Mr. Paul Boyce.”

“Funny, so did I,” Lorelei said. “Listen, Captain. When I took this job, personal service was not in the description. We have well over two hundred passengers and close to fifty crew members to prepare meals for three times a day. I do not have the staff to personally wait on one set of passengers, nor do I think it’s in their job descriptions to do so.”

“Is that what you told Mr. Boyce?” Captain Stemple asked. She gazed at Lorelei as she spoke, not revealing her emotions.

“That is what I told him. Although I was more professional when I spoke to him, at least the first time.”

“Professional is good,” the captain said. “And it’s required for this job, of course. But I don’t need to tell you that. You are well versed in what makes a successful business.”

“I tried to be,” she said. “But Captain, that man is more than simply rude. He is degrading and demanding and a little intimidating.”

“Do you mean he’s physically intimidating?” Captain Stemple asked. Her face softened.

“Absolutely, that’s what I mean,” she said.
